Ed Sheeran: Artist of the decade
Ed Sheeran, the Suffolk singer-songwriter, announced to be the artist of the decade by Official Charts Company (OCC) which complies with the UK pop chart.
He had the most No.1s across the album and singles chart from 2010 – 2019, with 12 No.1 singles and albums. Albums spend 41 weeks in total, Singles spend 38 weeks, which makes a total of 79 weeks. In the Top 40 singles chart, he has spent 572 weeks, which no other artist has ever spent.
Sheeran said: “This is nuts – I didn’t really expect to have a career past 5 years and to be able to have done this much for a decade… Thank you for your support.”
Sheeran also had a tour this year, which then became the world’s highest-grossing tour ever. It earned $775m (£558m), overtaking the record set by U2 in 2011. Sheeran has scored more than 1,000 weeks in the UK Top 75, with his single ‘South of the Border’ still in the Top 10. There is no artist whoever scored 1,000 weeks except Rihanna, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard who have to spend more time than his 1,002 weeks.
His ‘Shape of You’, the biggest hit of the decade, has been on the No.1 in the top singles, with over 4.5m sales combined. ‘Shape of You’ is one of his 3 singles in the Top 3, following ‘Thinking out loud’ and ‘Perfect’. He has sold 53.8m tracks, and have also been streamed 4.6 billion times on Spotify, in the UK alone.

The Top 10 is usually dominated by male artists. The female singers mostly appear in collaborations, like Kyla with Drake on the track ‘On Dance’, and Jess Glynne for singing Clean Bandit’s ‘Rather Be’.
“At the beginning of the decade, he was not well-known, albeit highly-rated, young 18-year-old lad from Suffolk – but his compilation of achievements since then are genuinely remarkable. Today, he is firmly accepted among the highest level of global music superstars,” says Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company. “Sheeran had ‘truly dominated’ the decade” he added.
If we talk about the albums, then Adele took the first 2 places with 21 (released in 2011 and sold 5.17m copies) and 25 (released in 2015). respectively.
Other then Alee, the only women in the top 10 albums is Emeli Sande, who ranks 8th for ‘Our Version Of Events’.
